Providing optimal care to your patients is important to you, and the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) is creating a continuing professional development (CPD) resource to help you do just that. The CFPC Professional Learning Plan (PLP) tool will help members like you set a plan to achieve your practice and learning goals with the vision of continually improving patient care.

We crafted a step-by-step PLP tool that addresses key points for CPD:
  • Seeing opportunities for practice improvement can be difficult on busy days—the PLP tool will help you find them
  • Improving patient care is everyone’s goal—we’ve enlisted physicians and other subject matter experts to help us create the PLP tool to optimize your learning and move you toward improvement
  • Allowing you to go at your own pace is what the PLP tool does—it encourages you to give yourself time to reflect on your practice data and implement your own ideas
  • Planning your own CPD is time-consuming and may not result in the most impactful ideas—our tool works for all members at all stages, in all types of family medicine practice

The tool is available in English and French, and can be accessed through the Mainpro+ portal. Login to your Mainpro+ account, scroll to the bottom of your dashboard and click ENTER on the PLP tool icon.

Peer-supported pathway: This 1 credit-per-hour Assessment activity has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 20 Mainpro+ certified credits.

Self-guided pathway: This 1 credit-per-hour Assessment activity has been certified by the College of Family Physicians of Canada for up to 12 Mainpro+ certified credits.

Professional Learning Plan Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Optimizing patient care, improving practice, and identifying practice gaps are important to family physicians. The College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC) Professional Learning Plan (PLP) is a new Mainpro+® certified tool designed to help support you in achieving your personalized continuing professional development (CPD) learning goals. Please read our FAQs to learn more about the PLP tool.

  • Why complete a PLP?

The PLP tool can help you identify your learning gaps and opportunities for practice improvement by providing access to relevant CPD activities to support you in achieving your goals.
  • How do I access the PLP tool?

The tool is available in English and French, and can be accessed through the Mainpro+ portal. Login to your Mainpro+ account, scroll to the bottom of your dashboard and click ENTER on the PLP tool icon.

  • Is there a fee to use the PLP?

The PLP tool is free to physicians enrolled with Mainpro+.
  • What are the benefits of a PLP?

Community and patient needs evolve over time and the PLP tool is a great way to identify and acheive your learning goals to help in every day practice and meet the needs of your patients. The PLP tool can also help with your non-clinical learning goals such as leadership, research, and practice administration.
  • What features does the online PLP tool offer?

This interactive and virtual tool is accessible right from participants’ Mainpro+ credit reporting dashboard. Links to tools and resources, including the CFPC calendars of events, connect you to valuable and relevant CPD opportunities.  You will have the opportunity to engage with a peer or coach to obtain feedback on your PLP or to work through the PLP on your own. Upon completing a PLP, you can print a customized summary of your inputs, as well as a certificate of completion.
  • What are the steps to a PLP?

The PLP activity has five steps, plus a post-reflection component. During Steps 1 to 4, you will assess your professional profile and address your individual learning goals. Step 5 allows you to reflect on the success and barriers of achieving your goals as they apply to your practice. The post-reflection activity allows you to share your overall observations and consider how you might approach your next CPD plan.
  • Two options are availble for users: Self-guided and peer-supported. What is the difference?

    Peer-supported (20 certified Mainpro+ assessment credits)
    • You’ll seek the support, perspective, or feedback from a peer/colleague you trust to help you dive deeper into your ideas and goals. If you are unable to access a peer/colleague, contact [email protected] and we will connect you with someone who can help. Use the peer support summary document so they can effectively support you in your activity. You do not have to provide the name of your reviewer; however, you will need to attest in the activity that a peer/colleague has reviewed your PLP.
    Self-guided (12 certified Mainpro+ assessment credits)
    • You’ll complete the steps at your own pace without review from a peer/colleague.

Note: To provide feedback on your overall goals and planning, we suggest that you work with a peer the first time you complete the PLP. A peer can be a colleague, administrative staff, a supervisor, mentor, or a certified coach.

  • Can I work on multiple PLPs simultaneously?

To encourage a focused approach, and reflection on the success of your plan, it’s best to complete one PLP at a time. You can; however, include up to three goals in one PLP. Upon completion of your PLP, you can immediately begin a new PLP.
  • How to claim credits?

After completing all five steps and a post-reflection, credits will automatically be entered into your Mainpro+ account for your current CPD cycle.
  • Do I need to finish my plan in one sitting?

You do not need to finish the PLP in one sitting. As you work through your PLP, your responses will be saved automatically so you can complete your activity in as many sessions as you require. We will send you email updates and reminders when it’s time to add content or mark your progress toward your goals in the tool.
  • How long will I have access to the tool?

You will have one year from the end of your selected module completion date to finish the PLP activity. If you do not compete the module in the allotted time, your PLP will expire and no credit will be awarded. You cannot claim partial credits for an incomplete PLP activity. Your expired activity will be accessible in view-only mode from your CPD activities list.
  • How many goals do I have to set for each PLP?

You can set up to three goals for each PLP activity.
  • Do I still get credits if I don’t achieve all the goals I set?

While we encourage you to complete your goal(s), Mainpro+ credits are contingent upon the completion of the PLP activity, not the personal goals set. Once you complete the PLP activity, including your post reflection, your credits will automatically be allocated to your CPD Mainpro+ account.
  • How do I cancel my PLP activity?

Please contact [email protected] to cancel your activity.

  • At what point in my CPD cycle can I use the PLP tool?

You can use the PLP tool at any point in your CPD cycle. Our digital tool is available 24/7.  Simply log in and complete your activities in sequence.
  • Can the PLP be used in a team or group practice setting?

While the PLP is meant to be completed by an individual member, it is a great resource to use within a group or team-based practice discussions. Each physician who completes their own PLPs will get their respective Mainpro+ credits.
  • If I am asked to review a colleague’s PLP, what do I need to do? Are there resources available?

You can help your colleague by ensuring their goals are SMART (specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and timely). A Peer Support resource guide has been created to help you review and support your colleague.

  • I have cancelled/paused my CFPC membership. Can I still use the PLP tool?

The PLP tool is only available to CFPC Mainpro+ participants. If you did not complete your activity in the allotted time period and have since cancelled your CFPC membership, you are not eligible to receive credits.
  • I am a family medicine resident. How do I participate in the PLP?

All family medicine residents receive complimentary access to the Mainpro+ platform as part of their CFPC membership. Login to your Mainpro+ account, scroll to the bottom of your dashboard and click ENTER on the PLP tool icon.
